Atom String Quartet

PENEDERECKI

Atom String Quartet reaches for the music of Krzysztof Penderecki – the most renowned Polish composer of our times. The programme’s main axis is made of chamber and solo pieces for wind instruments, from the Master’s youthful compositions, which are intertwined with “Three Pieces in Old Style”. Vitalism, motility and energy are main features of these compositions. They have naturally become a pretext for the quartet’s further exploration, interpreting Penderecki’s works in its characteristic style and thus giving them a completely new context. On the one hand, there is enough respect for the music score, on the other, there are brave formal decisions, which frame the improvised parts.

This programme was first performed in September 2018 during Krzysztof Penderecki 6th International Festival in Zabrze – Poland.

Warsaw’s Atom String Quartet was founded in 2010 by violinists Dawid Lubowicz and Mateusz Smoczyński, altoviolist Michał Zaborski and cellist Krzysztof Lenczowski. On its newest album, one of the leading and most intriguing improvising string quartets in the world ventures outside the world of jazz into the music of the great Polish contemporary compser Krzysztof Penderecki. Bat rather then tackling his avant garde works, they opted instead for his older, more traditional compositions. Some of these pieces are executed literally from the score, but others allow the ATQ to take liberty in improvised departures. Exhilarating!
